A Presidential Glimpse At Thanksgiving

Traditionally, every President of the United States of America makes an annual proclamation setting Thanksgiving apart as a National Holiday. Generally such proclamations are given as part of an address to the Nation, or simply published for posterity.

What I've found so very interesting about this search I've done, is that every President of the United States except one have given God the glory, and asked for His guidance and protection, and thanked Him for His bounteous provision. The exception only mentions God in passing, making no specific mention as to what we should be thankful for, or God's roll in the Nation. I'll let you figure out the one that gives menial lip service to his Maker.

What this says to me is a couple things: First of all, whoever decided that separation of church and state meant that God was to be removed entirely from the governance of this Great Nation is patently wrong! Every early President, and even the great documents of this Nation give God his rightful place in the leading of this Nation. And secondly, it is grossly telling what has happened to this wonderful Nation since the all out war against acknowledging the Almighty and All-loving Creator of our world and yes, our Nation has begun.

It's my prayer this Thanksgiving that people everywhere would include the Lord in their celebration of GIVING THANKS - to who? To the Lord of course. Our forefathers knew this. YOU know this. I know this. Let's not forget to include HIM in all we're thankful for this year.

Now, I present for you various Presidential Proclamations, from the beginning of our Great Nation to the present. The list is not all inclusive. I tried to present a selection from each "era" our Nation has gone through. The source for this information can be found here should you like to read all of them: http://www.pilgrimhall.org/ThanxProc.htm

IN CONGRESS
November 1, 1777

FORASMUCH as it is the indispensable Duty of all Men to adore the superintending Providence of Almighty God; to acknowledge with Gratitude their Obligation to him for Benefits received, and to implore such farther Blessings as they stand in Need of: And it having pleased him in his abundant Mercy, not only to continue to us the innumerable Bounties of his common Providence; but also to smile upon us in the Prosecution of a just and necessary War, for the Defense and Establishment of our unalienable Rights and Liberties; particularly in that he hath been pleased, in so great a Measure, to prosper the Means used for the Support of our Troops, and to crown our Arms with most signal success:

It is therefore recommended to the legislative or executive Powers of these UNITED STATES to set apart THURSDAY, the eighteenth Day of December next, for SOLEMN THANKSGIVING and PRAISE: That at one Time and with one Voice, the good People may express the grateful Feelings of their Hearts, and consecrate themselves to the Service of their Divine Benefactor; and that, together with their sincere Acknowledgments and Offerings, they may join the penitent Confession of their manifold Sins, whereby they had forfeited every Favor; and their humble and earnest Supplication that it may please GOD through the Merits of JESUS CHRIST, mercifully to forgive and blot them out of Remembrance; That it may please him graciously to afford his Blessing on the Governments of these States respectively, and prosper the public Council of the whole: To inspire our Commanders, both by Land and Sea, and all under them, with that Wisdom and Fortitude which may render them fit Instruments, under the Providence of Almighty GOD, to secure for these United States, the greatest of all human Blessings, INDEPENDENCE and PEACE: That it may please him, to prosper the Trade and Manufactures of the People, and the Labor of the Husbandman, that our Land may yield its Increase: To take Schools and Seminaries of Education, so necessary for cultivating the Principles of true Liberty, Virtue and Piety, under his nurturing Hand; and to prosper the Means of Religion, for the promotion and enlargement of that Kingdom, which consisteth "in Righteousness, Peace and Joy in the Holy Ghost."

And it is further recommended, That servile Labor, and such Recreation, as, though at other Times innocent, may be unbecoming the Purpose of this Appointment, be omitted on so solemn an Occasion.

1779 By the United States in Congress assembled. A PROCLAMATION.

Whereas it becomes us humbly to approach the throne of Almighty God, with gratitude and praise for the wonders which his goodness has wrought in conducting our forefathers to this western world; for his protection to them and to their posterity amid difficulties and dangers; for raising us, their children, from deep distress to be numbered among the nations of the earth; and for arming the hands of just and mighty princes in our deliverance; and especially for that he hath been pleased to grant us the enjoyment of health, and so to order the revolving seasons, that the earth hath produced her increase in abundance, blessing the labors of the husbandmen, and spreading plenty through the land; that he hath prospered our arms and those of our ally; been a shield to our troops in the hour of danger, pointed their swords to victory and led them in triumph over the bulwarks of the foe; that he hath gone with those who went out into the wilderness against the savage tribes; that he hath stayed the hand of the spoiler, and turned back his meditated destruction; that he hath prospered our commerce, and given success to those who sought the enemy on the face of the deep; and above all, that he hath diffused the glorious light of the gospel, whereby, through the merits of our gracious Redeemer, we may become the heirs of his eternal glory: therefore,

Resolved, That it be recommended to the several states, to appoint Thursday, the 9th of December next, to be a day of public and solemn thanksgiving to Almighty God for his mercies, and of prayer for the continuance of his favor and protection to these United States; to beseech him that he would be graciously pleased to influence our public councils, and bless them with wisdom from on high, with unanimity, firmness, and success; that he would go forth with our hosts and crown our arms with victory; that he would grant to his church the plentiful effusions of divine grace, and pour out his holy spirit on all ministers of the gospel; that he would bless and prosper the means of education, and spread the light of Christian knowledge through the remotest corners of the earth; that he would smile upon the labors of his people and cause the earth to bring forth her fruits in abundance; that we may with gratitude and gladness enjoy them; that he would take into his holy protection our illustrious ally, give him victory over his enemies, and render him signally great, as the father of his people and the protector of the rights of mankind; that he would graciously be pleased to turn the hearts of our enemies, and to dispense the blessings of peace to contending nations; that he would in mercy look down upon us, pardon our sins and receive us into his favor, and finally, that he would establish the independence of these United States upon the basis of religion and virtue, and support and protect them in the enjoyment of peace, liberty and safety. as long as the sun and moon shall endure, until time shall be no more. Done in Congress, the 20th day of October, one thousand seven hundred and seventy-nine, and in the 4th year of the independence of the United States of America.

THANKSGIVING DAY 1789 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - A PROCLAMATION

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor - and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be – That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks – for his kind care and protection of the People of this country previous to their becoming a Nation – for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war –for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed – for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions – to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually – to render our national government a blessing to all the People, by constantly being a government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed – to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord – To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and Us – and generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

GEORGE WASHINGTON.

A DAY OF FASTING & HUMILIATION (NOT THANKSGIVING!) 1799 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – A PROCLAMATION

As no truth is more clearly taught in the Volume of Inspiration, nor any more fully demonstrated by the experience of all ages, than that a deep sense and a due acknowledgment of the governing providence of a Supreme Being and of the accountableness of men to Him as the searcher of hearts and righteous distributer of rewards and punishments are conducive equally to the happiness and rectitude of individuals and to the well-being of communities; as it is also most reasonable in itself that men who are made capable of social acts and relations, who owe their improvements to the social state, and who derive their enjoyments from it, should, as a society, make their acknowledgments of dependence and obligation to Him who hath endowed them with these capacities and elevated them in the scale of existence by these distinctions; as it is likewise a plain dictate of duty and a strong sentiment of nature that in circumstances of great urgency and seasons of imminent danger earnest and particular supplications should be made to Him who is able to defend or to destroy; as, moreover, the most precious interests of the people of the United States are still held in jeopardy by the hostile designs and insidious acts of a foreign nation, as well as by the dissemination among them of those principles, subversive of the foundations of all religious, moral, and social obligations, that have produced incalculable mischief and misery in other countries; and as, in fine, the observance of special seasons for public religious solemnities is happily calculated to aver the evils which we ought to deprecate and to excite to the performance of the duties which we ought to discharge by calling and fixing the attention of the people at large to the momentous truths already recited, by affording opportunity to teach and inculcate them by animating devotion and giving to it the character of a national act :

For these reasons I have thought proper to recommend, and I do hereby recommend accordingly, that Thursday, the 25th day of April next, be observed throughout the United States of America as a day of solemn humiliation, fasting, and prayer; that the citizens on that day abstain as far as may be from their secular occupations, devote the time to the sacred duties of religion in public and in private; that they call to mind our numerous offenses against the Most High God, confess them before Him with the sincerest penitence, implore His pardoning mercy, through the Great Mediator and Redeemer, for our past transgressions, and that through the grace of His Holy Spirit we may be disposed and enabled to yield a more suitable obedience to His righteous requisitions in time to come; that He would interpose to arrest the progress of that impiety and licentiousness in principle and practice so offensive to Himself and so ruinous to mankind; that He would make us deeply sensible that "righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people"; that He would turn us from our transgressions and turn His displeasure from us; that He would withhold us from unreasonable discontent, from disunion, faction, sedition, and insurrection; that He would preserve our country from the desolating sword; that He would save our cities and towns from a repetition of those awful pestilential visitations under which they have lately suffered so severely, and that the health of our inhabitants generally may be precious in His sight; that He would favor us with fruitful seasons and so bless the labors of the husbandman as that there may be food in abundance for man and beast; that He would prosper our commerce, manufactures, and fisheries, and give success to the people in all their lawful industry and enterprise; that He would smile on our colleges, academies, schools, and seminaries of learning, and make them nurseries of sound science, morals, and religion; that He would bless all magistrates, from the highest to the lowest, give them the true spirit of their station, make them a terror to evil doers and a praise to them that do well; that He would preside over the councils of the nation at this critical period, enlighten them to a just discernment of the public interest, and save them from mistake, division, and discord; that He would make succeed our preparations for defense and bless our armaments by land and by sea; that He would put an end to the effusion of human blood and the accumulation of human misery among the contending nations of the earth by disposing them to justice, to equity, to benevolence, and to peace; and that he would extend the blessings of knowledge, of true liberty, and of pure and undefiled religion throughout the world.

And I do also recommend that with these acts of humiliation, penitence, and prayer, fervent thanksgiving to the Author of All Good be united for the countless favors which He is still continuing to the people of the United States, and which render their condition as a nation eminently happy when compared with the lot of others.
Given, etc.

THANKSGIVING DAY 1864 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – A PROCLAMATION

It has pleased Almighty God to prolong our national life another year, defending us with His guardian care against unfriendly designs from abroad and vouchsafing to us in His mercy many and signal victories over the enemy, who is of our own household. It has also pleased our Heavenly Father to favor as well our citizens in their homes as our soldiers in their camps and our sailors on the rivers and seas with unusual health. He has largely augmented our free population by emancipation and by immigration, while He has opened to use new sources of wealth and has crowned the labor of our workingmen in every department of industry with abundant rewards. Moreover, He has been pleased to animate and inspire our minds and hearts with fortitude, courage, and resolution sufficient for the great trial of civil war into which we have been brought by our adherence as a nation to the cause of freedom and humanity, and to afford to us reasonable hopes of an ultimate and happy deliverance from all our dangers and afflictions :

Now, therefore, I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, do hereby appoint and set apart the last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they may then be, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the Universe. And I do further recommend to my fellow-citizens aforesaid that on that occasion they do reverently humble themselves in the dust and from thence offer up penitent and fervent prayers and supplications to the Great Disposer of Events for a return of the inestimable blessings of peace, union, and harmony throughout the land which it has pleased Him to assign as a dwelling place for ourselves and for our posterity throughout all generations.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this 20th day of October, A.D. 1864, and of the Independence of the United States the eighty-ninth.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

THANKSGIVING DAY - 1880 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – A PROCLAMATION

At no period in their history since the United States became a nation has this people had so abundant and so universal reasons for joy and gratitude at the favor of Almighty God or been subject to so profound an obligation to give thanks for His loving kindness and humbly to implore His continued care and protection.

Health, wealth, and prosperity throughout all our borders; peace, honor, and friendship with all the world; firm and faithful adherence by the great body of our population to the principles of liberty and justice which have made our greatness as a nation, and to the wise institutions and strong frame of government and society, which will perpetuate it - for all these let the thanks of a happy and united people, as with one voice, ascend in devout homage to the Giver of All Good.

I therefore recommend that on Thursday, the 25th day of November next, the people meet in their respective places of worship to make their acknowledgments to Almighty God for His bounties and His protection and to offer to Him prayers for their continuance.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this 1st day of November, A.D. 1880, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and fifth.

THANKSGIVING DAY - 1902 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - A PROCLAMATION

According to the yearly custom of our people, it falls upon the President at this season to appoint a day of festival and thanksgiving to God. Over a century and a quarter has passed since this country took its place among the nations of the earth, and during that time we have had, on the whole, more to be thankful for than has fallen to the lot of any other people. Generation after generation has grown to manhood and passed away. Each has had to bear its peculiar burdens, each to face its special crisis, and each has known cares of grim trial, when the country was menaced by malice domestic or foreign levy, when the hand of the Lord was heavy upon it in drought or flood or pestilence, when in bodily distress and in anguish of soul it paid the penalty of folly and a froward heart. Nevertheless, decade by decade we have struggled onward and upward; we now abundantly enjoy material well-being, and under the favor of the Most High we are striving earnestly to achieve moral and spiritual uplifting. The year that has just closed has been one of peace and of overflowing plenty. Rarely has any people enjoyed greater prosperity than we are now enjoying. For this we render heartfelt thanks to the giver of Good; and we will seek to praise Him, not by words only, but by deeds, by the way in which we do our duty to ourselves and to our fellow-men.

Now, wherefore, I, Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States, do hereby designate as a day of general thanksgiving, Thursday, the twenty-seventh of the coming November, and do recommend that throughout the land the people cease from their ordinary occupations, and in their several homes and places of worship render thanks unto Almighty God for the manifold blessings of the past year.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the city of Washington, this twenty-ninth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and two, and of the Independence of the United States the one hundred and twenty-seventh.

THANKSGIVING - 1920 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - A PROCLAMATION

The season again approaches when it behooves us to turn from the distractions and preoccupations of our daily life, that we may contemplate the mercies which have been vouchsafed to us, and render heartfelt and unfeigned thanks unto God for His manifold goodness.

This is an old observance of the American people, deeply embedded in our thought and habit. The burdens and the stresses of life have their own insistence.

We have abundant cause for thanksgiving. The lesions of the war are rapidly healing. The great army of freemen, which America sent to the defense of Liberty, returning to the grateful embrace of the nation, has resumed the useful pursuits of peace, as simply and as promptly as it rushed to arms in obedience to the country’s call. The equal justice of our laws has received steady vindication in the support of a law-abiding people against various and sinister attacks, which have reflected only the baser agitations of war, now happily passing.

In plenty, security and peace, our virtuous and self-reliant people face the future, its duties and its opportunities. May we have vision to discern our duties; the strength, both of hand and resolve, to discharge them; and the soundness of heart to realize that the truest opportunities are those of service.

In a spirit, then, of devotion and stewardship we should give thanks in our hearts, and dedicate ourselves to the service of God’s merciful and loving purposes to His children.

Wherefore, I, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States do hereby designate Thursday, the twenty-fifth day of November next as a day of thanksgiving and prayer, and I call upon my countrymen to cease from their ordinary tasks and avocations upon that day, giving it up to the remembrance of God and His blessings, and their dutiful and grateful acknowledgment.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done in the district of Columbia this twelfth day of November, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and twenty, and of the independence of the United States the one hundred and forty-fifth.

WOODROW WILSON

THANKSGIVING - 1929 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - A PROCLAMATION

At this season of the year, when the harvest had been gathered in, the thoughts of our forefathers turned toward God with thanksgiving for the blessings of plenty and provision against the needs of winter. They came by custom to look to the Chief Magistrate to set apart a day of prayer and praise whereon their thanks as a united people might be given with one voice in unison. God has greatly blessed us as a nation in the year now drawing to a close. The earth has yielded an abundant harvest in most parts of our country. The fruits of industry have been of unexampled quantity and value. Both capital and labor have enjoyed an exceptional prosperity.

Assurances of peace, at home and abroad, have been strengthened and enlarged. Progress has been made in provision against preventable disasters from flood and pestilence. Enlightenment has grown apace in new revelations of scientific truth and in diffusion of knowledge. Educational opportunities have steadily enlarged. Enduring advances have been gained in the protection of the public health. Childhood is measurably more secure. New experience and new knowledge in many fields have been recorded, from which a deeper wisdom may grow. We should accept these blessings with resolution to devote them to service of Almighty God.

Now, therefore, I, Herbert Hoover, President of the United States of America, do appoint and set aside Thursday, the twenty-eighth day of November, as a day of National Thanksgiving, and do recommend that all our people on that day rest from their daily work that they should extend to others less fortunately placed, a share in their abundance, and that they gather at their accustomed places of worship, there to render up thanks to Almighty God for His many blessings upon them, for his forbearance and goodness.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the great seal of the United States.

Done at the City of Washington, this 5th day of November, in the year of our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred and Twenty-nine, and of the Independence of the United States, the One Hundred and Fifty-fourth.

THANKSGIVING DAY - 1940 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - A PROCLAMATION

I, FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate Thursday, the twenty-first day of November 1940, to be observed nationally as a day of thanksgiving.

In a year which has seen calamity and sorrow fall upon many peoples elsewhere in the world may we give thanks for our preservation.
On the same day, in the same hour, let us pray:

Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honourable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in Thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail; Amen.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States of America to be affixed.

DONE at the City of Washington this 9th day of November, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and forty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and sixty-fifth.

THANKSGIVING DAY, 1960 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS it has long been our custom as a people to pause from our labors for one day at the close of the harvest season and give special thanks to Almighty God for the bounty which He has bestowed upon our land; and

WHEREAS again this year we have been blessed with an abundant harvest; and

WHEREAS it is fitting and appropriate at this time of national thanksgiving that we should remember and respond to the needs of those of other lands; and

WHEREAS the Congress of the United States, by a joint resolution approved December 26, 1941 (55 Stat. 862; 5 U.S.C. 87b), has designated the fourth Thursday of November in each year as Thanksgiving Day:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, President of the United States of America, in consonance with the aforesaid resolution of Congress, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 24, 1960, as a day of national thanksgiving; and I urge the people of the United States to give grateful thought to the observance of this day.
Furthermore, I call upon our people, while giving thanks for our blessings, to direct their thoughts to the peoples of other lands less fortunate than we. In particular, I urge my fellow Americans to support and assist the efforts which we as a Nation, working individually and in cooperation with other nations, are directing toward the solution of the world-food problem.

Under the Food-for-Peace Program, a distinguished company of voluntary citizens’ groups and religious societies is making heart-warming contributions to this effort. I ask our people to give them continued support.

At the same time, I urge my fellow Americans to assist in the Freedom-from-Hunger Campaign of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Our Government fully supports the objectives of this organization. But success of its campaign requires the active cooperation of generous citizens, and of public and private groups, in our country and around the world.

Let us hope that some day, under a benevolent Providence and through the best use of the world’s God-given resources, each nation will have reason to celebrate its own thanksgiving day.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

DONE at the City of Washington this 11th day of November in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty, of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and eighty-fifth.

PROCLAMATION 3438 : THANKSGIVING DAY, 1961 OCTOBER 28, 1961 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES A PROCLAMATION :

"It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord."

More than three centuries ago, the Pilgrims, after a year of hardship and peril, humbly and reverently set aside a special day upon which to give thanks to God for their preservation and for the good harvest from the virgin soil upon which they had labored. Grave and unknown dangers remained. Yet by their faith and by their toil they had survived the rigors of the harsh New England winter. Hence they paused in their labors to give thanks for the blessings that had been bestowed upon them by Divine Providence.

This year, as the harvest draws near its close and the year approaches its end, awesome perils again remain to be faced. Yet we have, as in the past, ample reason to be thankful for the abundance of our blessings. We are grateful for the blessings of faith and health and strength and for the imperishable spiritual gifts of love and hope. We give thanks, too, for our freedom as a nation; for the strength of our arms and the faith of our friends; for the beliefs and confidence we share; for our determination to stand firmly for what we believe to be right and to resist mightily what we believe to be base; and for the heritage of liberty bequeathed by our ancestors which we are privileged to preserve for our children and our children's children.

It is right that we should be grateful for the plenty amidst which we live; the productivity of our farms, the output of our factories, the skill of our artisans, and the ingenuity of our investors. But in the midst of our thanksgiving, let us not be unmindful of the plight of those in many parts of the world to whom hunger is no stranger and the plight of those millions more who live without the blessings of liberty and freedom. With some we are able to share our material abundance through our Food-for-Peace Program and through our support of the United Nations Freedom-from-Hunger Campaign. To all we can offer the sustenance of hope that we shall not fail in our unceasing efforts to make this a peaceful and prosperous world for all mankind.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN F. KENNEDY, President of the United States of America, in consonance with the joint resolution of Congress approved December 26, 1941, which designates the fourth Thursday in November of each year as Thanksgiving Day, do hereby proclaim Thursday, the twenty-third day of November of this year, as a day of national thanksgiving.

I urge all citizens to make this Thanksgiving not merely a holiday from their labors, but rather a day of contemplation. I ask the head of each family to recount to his children the story of the first New England thanksgiving, thus to impress upon future generations the heritage of this nation born in toil, in danger, in purpose, and in the conviction that right and justice and freedom can through man’s efforts persevere and come to fruition with the blessing of God.

Let us observe this day with reverence and with prayer that will rekindle in us the will and show us the way not only to preserve our blessings, but also to extend them to the four corners of the earth. Let us by our example, as well as by our material aid, assist all peoples of all nations who are striving to achieve a better life in freedom.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed.

DONE at the City of Washington this twenty-seventh day of October in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-one, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and eighty-sixth.

PROCLAMATION 3944, THANKSGIVING DAY, 1969. BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION

On October 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln invited his fellow citizens to "set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of Thanksgiving…" This was the year of the battle of Gettysburg and of other major battles between Americans on American soil. To many, this call for a national day of Thanksgiving must have seemed strange, coming as it did at a time of war and bitterness.

Yet Lincoln knew that the act of thanksgiving should not be limited to time of peace and serenity. He knew that it is precisely at those times of hardship when men most need to recognize that the Source of all good constantly bestows His blessings on mankind.
Today, despite our material wealth and well-being, Americans face complex problems unknown before in our nation’s history. In giving thanks today, we express gratitude for past bounty and we also confidently face the challenges confronting our own nation and the world because we know we can rely on a strength greater than ourselves.

This year, let us especially seek to rekindle in our respective hearts and minds the spirit of our first settlers who valued freedom above all else, and who found much for which to be thankful when material comforts were meager. We are, indeed, a most fortunate people.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICHARD NIXON, President of the United States of America, in consonance with Section 6103 of Title 5 of the United States Code designating the fourth Thursday of November in each year as Thanksgiving Day, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 27, 1969, as a day of national thanksgiving.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twelfth day of November, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred sixty-nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred ninety-fourth.

RICHARD NIXON.

PROCLAMATION 4405, THANKSGIVING DAY, 1975 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION

Two hundred years ago the frontier colonies of America braced for a long and determined conflict with the strongest military power in the world. The petition of our Founding Fathers for redress of their grievances had been rejected by King and Parliament, and the people of America began the struggle from which emerged this great Nation.

Our Nation is the oldest continuously surviving republic in the world. For 200 years our freedoms have been questioned, challenged, tested and reinforced. These freedoms have shaped our destiny and served as a beacon to other peoples. Our Nation draws its strength from people of every creed, of every color, of every race - native Americans and people from every nation in the world who for two centuries have come to share in the rewards and responsibilities of our American Republic.

On the eve of our 200th year, Thanksgiving Day should be a day of special reflection upon the qualities of heart, mind and character of the men and women who founded and built our great Nation. Let us join in giving thanks for our cultural pluralism. Let us celebrate our diversity and the great strengths that have come from sharing our traditions, our ideas, our resources, our hopes and our dreams. Let us be grateful that for 200 years our people have been dedicated to fulfilling the democratic ideal - dedicated to securing "liberty and justice for all."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GERALD R. FORD, President of the United States of America, in accord with Section 6103 of Title 5 of the United States Code, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 27, 1975, as a day of national thanksgiving.

Let each of us, in his own way, join in expressing personal gratitude for the blessings of liberty and peace we enjoy today. In so doing, let us reaffirm our belief in a dynamic spirit that will continue to nurture and guide us as we prepare to meet the challenge of our third century.

I call upon all Americans on this day to gather with family and friends in homes and places of worship and join in offering gratitude for this Nation’s countless blessings. I ask that we share with our senior citizens and with those less fortunate than ourselves this special day that brings us all closer together.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fourth day of November, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred seventy-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundredth.

THANKSGIVING DAY, 1979 Proclamation 4693. September 28, 1979. BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION

Thanksgiving Day was first celebrated in this land not in a moment of unbridled triumph, but in times of great adversity. The colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia had few material possessions to help them face the dangers of the wilderness. They had no certainty that the harvests for which they gave thanks would be sufficient to carry them through a long winter. Yet they gave thanks to God for what they had and for the hope of this new land.

In the darkest hour of the American Revolution, when the young Republic faced defeat by the strongest military power on Earth, our forefathers also saw fit to give thanks for their blessings. In the midst of a devastating Civil War, President Lincoln proclaimed a day to express gratitude for our "singular deliverances and blessings."

The ensuing years have multiplied our nation’s blessings. We have been delivered from repeated perils, and we have been blessed with abundance beyond the imaginings of those who offered thanks in the chill of approaching winter more than three-and-one-half centuries ago.

Succeeding generations have broadened the freedom they cherished and the opportunity they sought, and built a mighty nation on the strong foundations they laid. In this two hundred and fourth year of our independence, we have good reasons for gratitude: for liberty in a world where repression is common, for peace in a world of threats and terror and war, for a bounteous harvest in a world where hunger and despair still stalk much of mankind.

Like those who came before us, we come to give thanks for our singular deliverances and blessings, in a time of both danger and great promise. May we be thankful in proportion to that which we have received, trusting not in our wealth and comforts, but in the strength of our purpose, that all nations might be similarly blessed with liberty and abundance and live in peace.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JIMMY CARTER, President of the United States of America, do proclaim Thursday, the 22nd of November, 1979 as Thanksgiving Day. I ask all American to give thanks on that day for the blessings Almighty God has bestowed upon us, and seek to be good steward of what we have received.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of September, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred seventy-nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fourth.

Proclamation 5844 - Thanksgiving Day, 1988 August 4, 1988 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION

The celebration of Thanksgiving Day is one of our Nation’s most venerable and cherished traditions. Almost 200 years ago, the first President of these United States, George Washington, issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation under the Constitution and recommended to the American people that they "be devoted to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be." He called upon them to raise "prayers and supplications to the Great Lord and Ruler of Nations," not merely for continued blessings on our own land but on all rulers and nations that they might know "good government, peace, and concord."

A century ago, President Grover Cleveland called for "prayers and song of praise" that would render to God the appreciation of the American people for His mercy and for the abundant harvests and rich rewards He had bestowed upon our Nation through the labor of its farmers, shopkeepers, and tradesmen. Both of these Proclamations included something else as well: a recognition of our shortcomings and transgressions and our dependence, in total and in every particular, on the forgiveness and forbearance of the Almighty.

Today, cognizant of our American heritage of freedom and opportunity, we are again called to gratitude, thanksgiving, and contrition. Thanksgiving Day summons every American to pause in the midst of activity, however necessary and valuable, to give simple and humble thanks to God. This gracious gratitude is the "service" of which Washington spoke. It is a service that opens our hearts to one another as members of a single family gathered around the bounteous table of God’s Creation. The images of the Thanksgiving celebrations at America’s earliest settlement - of Pilgrim and Iroquois Confederacy assembled in festive friendship - resonate with even greater power in our own day. People from every race, culture, and creed on the face of the Earth now inhabit this land. Their presence illuminates the basic yearning for freedom, peace, and prosperity that has always been the spirit of the New World.

In this year when we as a people enjoy the fruits of economic growth and international cooperation, let us take time both to remember the sacrifices that have made this harvest possible and the needs of those who do not fully partake of its benefits. The wonder of our agricultural abundance must be recalled as the work of farmer who, under the best and worst of conditions, give their all to raise food upon the land. The gratitude that fills our being must be tempered with compassion for the needy. The blessings that are ours must be understood as the gift of a loving God Whose greatest gift is healing. Let us join then, with the psalmist of old:

O give thanks to the Lord, call on His name, Make known His deeds among the peoples!
Sing to Him, sing praises to Him, Tell of all His wonderful works!
Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RONALD REAGAN, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 24, 1988, as a National Day of thanksgiving, and I call upon the citizens of this great Nation to gather together in homes and places of worship on that day of thanks to affirm by their prayers and their gratitude the many blessings God has bestowed upon us.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fourth day of August, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirteenth.

Proclamation 6380 - THANKSGIVING DAY, 1991 November 25, 1991 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION

From the moment it was "conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal," our Nation has enjoyed the mercy and protection of Almighty God. Thus, when we join with family and friends on Thanksgiving, we celebrate not only the many blessings that we have received as individuals - including the gift of life itself - but also our great fortune as one nation under God. On this occasion, Americans of every race, creed, and walk of life are united by a profound sense of gratitude and duty.

As we continue the Thanksgiving tradition, a tradition cherished by every generation of Americans, we reflect in a special way on the blessings of the past year. When this Nation and its coalition partners took up arms in a last-resort effort to repel aggression in the Persian Gulf, we were spared the terrible consequences of a long and protracted struggle. Indeed, the millions of people who prayed for a quick end to the fighting saw those prayers answered with a swiftness and certainty that exceeded all expectations. During the past year, we have also witnessed the demise of communism and welcomed millions of courageous people into the community of free nations.

Of course, as we give thanks for these and other developments, we also remember the less fortunate - those who do not yet share in the promise of freedom; those who do not know the comfort of peace and security; and those whose tables do not reflect prosperity and plenty.

Time and again, Scripture describes our Creator’s special love for the poor. As the Psalmist wrote, "He pours contempt upon princes … yet sets the poor on high from affliction." In this great nation, we have a special obligation to care for the ill and the destitute. Therefore, recalling that much will be asked of those to whom much has been given, let us resolve to make food drives and other forms of charity an increasingly important part of our Thanksgiving tradition.

On this occasion, as we count our blessings and reach out to help the less fortunate, we also do well to remember that, in many ways, the poorest nations are those who neither recognize nor revere what our Founders called "the laws of Nature and of Nature’s God." Indeed, we have seen totalitarian regimes impoverish entire peoples, not just economically, but spiritually, by denigrating religion and by denying the inherent dignity and worth of individuals. The moral bankruptcy of communism should remind every free nation of the dangers of cynicism and materialism.

Similarly, can any individual be truly rich or truly satisfied if he or she has not discovered the rewards of service to one’s fellowman? Since mot of us first experience the love of God through the goodness and generosity of others, what better gift could we give our children than a positive example?

Finally, as we gather with family and friends on Thanksgiving, we know that our greatest blessings are not necessarily material ones. Indeed, perhaps the best thing about this occasion is that it reminds us that God loves each and every one of us. Like a faithful and loving parent, He always stands ready to comfort, guide, and forgive. That is our real cause for Thanksgiving, today and every day of our lives.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 28, 1991, as a National Day of Thanksgiving. I urge all Americans to gather together in their homes and in places of worship on that day to offer thanks to Almighty God for the many blessings that He has bestowed upon us as individuals and as a Nation.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fifth day of November, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and ninety-one, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and sixteenth.

November 20, 1999 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION

Well over three and a half centuries ago, strengthened by faith and bound by a common desire for liberty, a small band of Pilgrims sought out a place in the New World where they could worship according to their own beliefs. Surviving their first harsh winter in Massachusetts and grateful to a merciful God for a sustaining harvest, the men and women of Plymouth Colony set aside three days as a time to give thanks for the bounty of their fields, the fruits of their labor, the chance to live in peace with their Native American neighbors, and the blessings of a land where they could live and worship freely.

We have come far on our American journey since that early Thanksgiving. In the intervening years, we have lived through times of war and peace, years of poverty and plenty, and seasons of social and political upheaval that have shaped and forever changed our national character and experience. As we gather around our Thanksgiving tables again this year, it is a fitting time to reflect on how the events of our rich history have affected those we care about and those who came before us. As we acknowledge the past, we do so knowing that the individual blessings for which we give thanks may have changed, but our gratitude to God and our commitment to our fellow Americans remain constant.

Today we count among our national blessings a time of unprecedented prosperity, with an expanding economy, record low rates of poverty and unemployment among our people, and the limitless opportunities to improve the quality of life that new technologies present to us. We can give thanks today that for the first time in history, more than half the world's people live under governments of their own choosing. And we remain grateful for the peace and freedom America continues to enjoy thanks to the courage and patriotism of our men and women in uniform.

But the spirit of Thanksgiving requires more than just an acknowledgment of our blessings; it calls upon us to reach out and share those blessings with others. We must strive to fulfill the promise of the extraordinary era in which we live and enter the new century with a commitment to widen the circle of opportunity, break down the prejudices that alienate us from one another, and build an America of understanding and inclusion, strong in our diversity, responsible in our freedom, and generous in sharing our bounty with those in need.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, WILLIAM J. CLINTON, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 25, 1999, as a National Day of Thanksgiving. I encourage all the people of the United States to assemble in their homes, places of worship, or community centers to share the spirit of fellowship and prayer and to reinforce the ties of family and community; to express heartfelt thanks to God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us; and to reach out in true gratitude and friendship to our brothers and sisters in the larger family of humankind.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twentieth day of November, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and ninety-nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-fourth.

WILLIAM J. CLINTON

Thanksgiving Day, 2007 A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Americans are a grateful people, ever mindful of the many ways we have been blessed. On Thanksgiving Day, we lift our hearts in gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy, the people we love, and the gifts of our prosperous land.

Our country was founded by men and women who realized their dependence on God and were humbled by His providence and grace. The early explorers and settlers who arrived in this land gave thanks for God's protection and for the extraordinary natural abundance they found. Since the first National Day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed by President George Washington, Americans have come together to offer thanks for our many blessings. We recall the great privilege it is to live in a land where freedom is the right of every person and where all can pursue their dreams. We express our deep appreciation for the sacrifices of the honorable men and women in uniform who defend liberty. As they work to advance the cause of freedom, our Nation keeps these brave individuals and their families in our thoughts, and we pray for their safe return.

While Thanksgiving is a time to gather in a spirit of gratitude with family, friends, and neighbors, it is also an opportunity to serve others and to share our blessings with those in need. By answering the universal call to love a neighbor as we want to be loved ourselves, we make our Nation a more hopeful and caring place.

This Thanksgiving, may we reflect upon the past year with gratefulness and look toward the future with hope. Let us give thanks for all we have been given and ask God to continue to bless our families and our Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 22, 2007, as a National Day of Thanksgiving. I encourage all Americans to gather together in their homes and places of worship with family, friends, and loved ones to reinforce the ties that bind us and give thanks for the freedoms and many blessings we enjoy.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fifteenth day of November, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Well, there you have it. Does God belong in our lives, in our Government, in our Nation? The majority of our Presidents seem to think so. I pray that new President-Elect Obama will recognize that this nation was founded under God - By God, from God, and by His Will. I pray that he'll remember to be truly thankful to HIS creator, and that he won't force his anti-God, pro-tolerance attitude upon the only National Holiday that calls us to be thankful to God and remember from whom our Blessings Flow!

Unhinged it's true, but rock-solid for the Lord!

I saw a new doctor...

I went and saw a new rheumatologist yesterday. It took me six months to get in to see him, and yeah, it was worth the wait, but I always get a bit discouraged when I go. We're going to get to the bottom of the issue instead of just throwing more medications at it.

I wrote the following poem in response to my frustrations:

The New Malady

So, another doctor threw his hat into the ring today.
Tall and gaunt with a tender touch, he seemed OK,
but who can know? Right away it's, 'I'm not convinced
what we're looking at here is AS, ' 'WE'RE? ! ? ' WHO? Me and you?
You and your evil alter-ego? Why not just say,
'I think you're full of it, and looking for ways to get drugs! '?

Without reason, and before he even touched me, I'd
begun to panic. Everyone aside from ONE doctor wants
to put another polysyllabic symptom and 'Dx' on my chart -
another gooey hunk of medical arts taffy sure to pull money
from my wallet as readily as it sucks the fillings
from my teeth.

'No, what I think you have is 'youllneverbeabletopaymybillsitis, '
it's not as rare as you might think, and it manifests itself
with extreme lower extremity pain, normally localized in your rectum,
and complicated by an extreme lack of natural or artificial
lubrication as I - as your doctor, the system, and most of all,
your insurance company gives it to you high and hard,
and you know, the more I look at you, the more I feel like,
damn if it don't look like it might be terminal!

'Hmmm let's see, that'll be - 'thirtysevenhundreddollarspayableincashcashierscheck
oryourfirstchildwhichevercomesfirst' - thank you very much! '

Um... excuse me doc? Can we go back to AS again?

Please?

'I'm sorry son, did you say something? I couldn't hear you over
the noise my bank account was making in my ear? '

Please? Go back? To...? oh hell, never mind...

It seems as though the medical professions are so helpful, but have their hands tied by HMOs and insurance companies - the largest legalized piracy on earth.

Unhinged... of course!

Left Behind...

"Hey Mike, I keep hearing this word, "rapture"... what does it mean, and why should it be important to me? Well, you asked!

"RAPTURE" "Being LEFT BEHIND" "Missing the SECOND COMING" "Discovering that MILLIONS HAVE DISAPPEARED..." You've heard them all... Now, what do they mean?

I've been noticing lately that a lot of mainstream Christian websites are beginning to post "What to do if millions disappear" web pages on their sites. All of them address issues like what to do if your entire family is gone and you are left, or what to do if you've been raised in a Christian home, and you KNOW what just happened etc. Quite honestly, it's freaked me out a little bit.

Why would rapture-talk cause me concern? Well, because frankly, many of my own family members are not saved. And, honestly, the times and events around us that are happening seem to line up well with end-times prophesy. Dr. David Reagan of Lamb & Lion Ministries (http://www.lamblion.com/index.php) has been warning of the end times for some time now. On his website you will see a link to an article entitled, "Did Many People Disappear? Jesus Came, What Next?" which goes into great depth about what to do now that you've been left behind. The article is written by Nathan Jones - a ministry partner with Dr. Reagan. I recommend reading them.

I'd like to just point out a couple things. This isn't a joke. Many people feel because of the popularity of the Tim LaHaye, Jerry Jenkins novels - "Left Behind" that the rapture is simply a device used in fiction to create a good story. Well, the fact is, Jesus IS coming back. When he does, we can expect that many people will disappear - why? Because the infallible Word of God tells us so. In the book of 1 Thessalonians 4:13 - 18, we're told, "But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words." That phrase in red - "caught up" is the word "ἁρπάζω" or "harpazo" - which means, "catch (away, up), pluck, pull, take (by force)" Indicating that it will be sudden, and seemingly violent or quick. The English word "rapture" comes from the latin verb meaning "caught up" In the Latin Vulgate, the phrase, "caught up" is rendered, "rapiemur" or "raptus," hence our use of the word, "rapture" literally, "snatched away." This is the same verb used in Acts 8:39 after Philip had witnessed to the ethiopian eunich and had baptized him. The bible says that, "...when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea."

We can trust that this will happen because Jesus Himself said it would. in John 14:1-3 it says, "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." Also, in 1 Corinthians 15: 51 & 52 it says, "Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."

Also,in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus alludes to this event in chapter 24:29-44 by using phrases such as, "And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." (vs. 31) and "But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come." (vss. 37-42) That last part of the passage (vs. 40-42) should cause you to think. Jesus said it plainly. THERE WILL BE PEOPLE LEFT BEHIND - EVEN IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD!

We've all seen this image. But I want you to take a close look at it and consider that when the Lord comes back to take His church off the earth - the REAL Church - NOT an organization as some would have you believe, but rather, the BODY OF BELIEVERS - or all who've made Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior of their lives - it will signal the beginning of what the bible calls the tribulation. A time of intense suffering like the world has never known. Those who are left behind will experience suffering - even if they come to faith in the Jesus Christ of the Bible... they will still suffer. The point is, don't miss it the first time. Don't go through the tribulation. Don't put yourself in a position to have to choose to take the mark of the beast, or face being beheaded. Make Him Lord of your life now.

Jesus is standing at the door knocking. I love this picture because it shows no door knob. He never forces His way into anyone's life. It's up to you to invite Him in, and open that door. The bible tells us that all of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and that there is none righteous on this earth. (Romans 3: 10 & 23). But the wonderful news - literally the "GOSPEL" or GOOD NEWS, is that "God demonstrated his own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!" But most important, "the Lord is not slack concerning His promise, but is longsuffering towards us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." (2 Pet. 3:9) The Lord has been patient in delaying his return. His desire is that all would repent and turn to Him. He has waited and waited, but now is the time! There are no biblical prophesies concerning the second coming of Christ yet to be fulfilled, and with all the signs of the times, there is little time for you to sit on this and wait.

So, you ask yourself the question, "Do I need to be saved?" Well the answer is found in the bible. God is holy. No sin will ever enter His presence, for 'righteousness and judgement are the habitation of His throne.' " (Ps 97:2) Man is sinful. "For all have sinned all fallen short of the Glory of God." (Romans 3:23) Sin separates man from God. "But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you." (Isaiah 59:2) It is impossible for man to save himself. "By the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight." (Romans 3:20) - In other words, WORKS will not save you.

If all are sinners, you may ask, "Can I be saved?" Again we turn to what the Word of God says: God sent His Son to be your Savior. "Herin is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to the propitiation (payment) for our sins." (1 John 4:10). The living Savior invites sinners to receive Him. "Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) Forgiveness of sins and salvation can be yours today! "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God." (1 Peter 3:18)

Now, know that you CAN INDEED be saved, you might ask, "How can I be saved?" It shouldn't surprise you that the bible shares this as well. Agree with God that you are a lost sinner unable to save yourself. "God commendeth His love towards us, in that, while we were sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8) Believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and ask Him to be your Savior. "As many as receive Him, to them He gave power to become sons of God, even to them that believe on His name." (John 1:12) You are not born as a child of God. We are alienated from him by sin. You only become adopted, or grafted in through belief and acceptance. Confess the Lord Jesus Christ before men. "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved!" (Romans 10:9-10)

It's really that easy. Think about it. If you were Satan, and you wanted to keep people in your control, or thinking they'll never measure up, you'd make the conditions of salvation almost impossible to obtain. If you're LDS, this means keeping ALL of the commandments, being faithful in tithes, temple work, and callings. Not one person on earth can keep the commandments of God without failing. Jesus Christ made salvation simple so we wouldn't miss it. Satan has complicated it with ritual, obligation, works, lies, and false prophets, teachers, and doctrine. If you can believe that Jesus Christ would never lie, then take him at His word, revealed through those men inspired of the Holy Spirit to write what they did... and from His own words. He said,

"Verily verily I say unto you, he that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death into life!"
(John 5:24)

Jesus is alive, and He's coming back.
Be found waiting - Not wanting!

My Father's Funeral Sermon

I've wanted to post this for some time. Why? Well, because it reminds me that I don't always know who is and isn't saved, and who does and who does not know God. I struggled with this sermon for many reasons - chief among them was my brother Todd who was a fairly new believer at the time. I wanted to give him some comfort and peace of mind.

Dad wasn't religious. In fact, Dad didn't want to have anything to do with faith, religion, or discussion about those topics. Whenever I tried to share with my Father, he'd shut me down fast and hard, telling me that if it worked for me, that was great, but he didn't want to hear about it. My father had been offended many years before by members of a LDS Ward choir who openly questioned his worthiness to be part of the choir and sing all because my father smoked. True to their hypocritical nature, they ran my father off and made it impossible for me to ever share the good news of Jesus Christ with my Dad. But that doesn't mean he didn't know the Lord. Maybe I'm deluding myself - I don't know, but I'd like to think that like Winston Churchhill, he was ready to meet his maker, but knew for certain the Maker was likely not prepared for the uproar he'd make when he got there! I love my Dad... and it's hard to believe he's been gone almost three years.I miss him.

I love you Dad, I hope you don't mind me sharing this!

Thank you all for those kind words and remembrances. I certainly have a difficult task ahead of me. How does a son adequately pay tribute to such a foundational element in his life? How do I say goodbye? How do I say anything of worth or value at a time such as this? I am humbled by this opportunity to share with you about my Father, and express my love for him in such a public way. Thank you all for your kind words, your love and your support. Thank you for being here for my Father. Thank you from all of us.

As many of you know, I’ve been a pastor for the last six years, and I’ve even done several funerals during that time, and even a couple very difficult ones – but none has been so difficult to prepare for as my own father’s. All of the words of comfort seem to fall short, and the normal, gracious platitudes seem even emptier when the one you’re speaking of has been such an influence in your life. In fact, this has been the hardest thing I’ve done in a very, very long time.

We are never ready when death makes its visit. Even through extended illness or trauma, that final moment is never fully prepared for – we’re always taken by surprise. The Bible tells us that we aren’t promised even our next breath, and that every moment of our lives is but a vapor. The question then begs to be asked – are you prepared? Are you prepared for that moment when you step into eternity? When all the “cosmic questions” will be answered – when we’ll meet our maker? I believe my Father was ready. I believe he knew death was coming. He prepared. He moved things to where they would be readily found… he had his affairs in order, and he was ready to meet his maker.

Winston Churchill said, “I am ready to meet my maker, but whether my maker is prepared for the ordeal of meeting me is another matter.”

I believe that some extensive preparation was needed for the arrival of my father – not because of the disruptive nature of his appearance there, but because of the amount of celebration that accompanied his graduation day. Many a great man has gone before him, and many more will follow him, but none have or will mean so much to me personally. Because of that, I’ve taken a hard look at my father and the life he led and have discovered nine specific characteristics or words that describe him. I’d briefly like to share those observations with you.

Love:

Anyone who knew my father would have to say that they had encountered a man who knew how to love. Dad wasn’t overt about the way he showed his love as some would count overtness, but I never once had to guess if my father loved me. I was always sure of it, as sure as I was the sun would rise tomorrow.

Kahlil Gibran said, “Love has power that dispels death; charm that conquers the enemy.” Simply put, because my father loved the way he did, and is loved as we love him, he will live on, not just in the eternities, but mortally here in our hearts.

I used to look at my father when he was around Pat, and wonder to myself if I would ever experience the kind of love that they shared. I didn’t think it was really possible to be that much in love. I’m happy to say I have that kind of love with my beautiful wife – and I owe much of that to the fine example of agape – selfless love – that my father modeled for me. I was shown first, so I could, in turn, show Chris. Yes, my father knew how to love.

Joy:

Every year, my father would come to my house on Christmas morning. As we all know, he was an incredibly difficult man to buy for. It was always a struggle to find something that wouldn’t end up on the 3 foot high pile on his dining room table. We discovered that Dad got his fun out of watching our kids open their presents and spending time with them. Recently at Christmas, we had given our kids Nerf dart guns. Well, Grandpa Bill came by for dinner shortly afterwards, and suffered the humiliation of having my kids lick the darts and stick them one by one on top of his head to form a Mohawk… and laughed the entire time.

Once Todd gave dad an electronic fishing game. If you don’t think Dad knew joy, you’ve never seen him trying desperately to land the whopper on that game. But all in all it wasn’t that Dad knew, or experienced joy, but rather, that he oozed joy to those around him. Sitting on the couch with big red wax lips stuck in his mouth and making faces, or reciting his famous “My Mother” poem, brought not only screams of laughter, but lasting joy as well. My father knew joy. My father was a joy.

It has been said that joy never feasts so high as when the first course is that of misery. This hurts… and we are in misery, but as the bible says in the book of Psalms, “weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.” Friends – family? The Morning is coming.

Peace:

In this world, peace is elusive, but my father lived in peace. As far as my experience with my Dad went, turmoil was foreign to him. Every time I visited with him he was calm, confident and sure. He seemed to be sustained by the hope of seeing Pat again, and of being re-united with friends and family. On many occasions I took the opportunity to look deeply into my father’s eyes and I was always met with peace. With calm. The older Dad got, the deeper the peace became. I used to wonder to myself what he knew that I did not. I believe I understand better now what his secret was – he was content with his life. He was at peace.

The best example of this is the way my father died. When I was called to the house by the Police and came through the door, I was certain that they had made a mistake. He was only sleeping. But as I approached his lifeless form, I could tell he was gone – but the peace that permeated his life was still reflected on his countenance. I only pray that I can one day pass as easily. He was truly a man OF peace, AT peace.

Patience:

The best proof of my Dad’s patience is that he successfully raised me. This amazing bastion of masculinity before you didn’t just happen I’ll have you know… there was some shaping and modeling that went on. Some painful shaping at times, but always done with patience and endurance.

The fact that my dad could watch 72 holes of golf on TV and enjoy it speaks to this man’s great patience! The fact that he tried to teach me to golf showed that my dad wasn’t above testing his patience on occasion.

Kindness and Goodness:

We don’t have the time that it would take to describe my father’s kindness, or his immeasurable goodness. I have been the glad recipient of his kindness and goodness all of my life. His neighbors and friends knew of his kindness and goodness. Goethe said, “Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together.” And as such, my father was a powerful link in that chain.

Another word for goodness is justice. My father was a good man – he was a fair man and he was a just man. These were traits that my father and I discussed on many occasions. And one thing I could always count on was that my father would err on the side of mercy and goodness over law and legalism.

You can also define a person’s kindness and goodness by their generosity. And anyone who knew Dad could attest to his generosity and giving. It has been said that if there is no truer measure of a man than what he does, it must be by what he gives. We’re told in the bible that the Lord loves a cheerful giver, and Dad was that. If it was a time of trouble and need, or a birthday, or Christmas, Dad’s generosity was un-matched, and a phenomenal example to me. A profound example of his goodness, kindness and generosity, can be found in the last check he wrote before he died. He was supporting the Utah Food Bank with a donation. Wordsworth said, “The best portion of a good man’s life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.” Albert Pike added, “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.”

Faithfulness:

There were several times in my life where I made improper choices. Because I had been adopted and had some issues with separation and losing my family, I was always afraid that I would be abandoned again. But through it all, my father remained faithful to me. I never once doubted that he would be there for me. Even through my parent’s divorce, he always made sure I knew that he was there for me.

I remember once as he stood by my side in court as the judgment was handed down for something I had done, he slipped his hand up to rest it on my shoulder. I believe he did that for a couple reasons – one, to settle my shaking, and second to reassure me that he would walk beside me through this hard time.

Gentleness:

True masculinity displays itself in gentleness. My father was always a “man’s man” in every way. He was an athlete, a hunter – pretty much what ever you would define as a “manly man.” Yet to see him hold his grandchildren, or to see him talk about Pat, and you would see the purest essence of gentleness. Dad always modeled masculinity and gentleness for me.

Self Control:

Just take a look at my Dad’s red chair and you’ll see no better example of self control. How he could sit there for all those years with his dust halo, is beyond me – it must have taken Herculean self control! His very lifestyle spoke of self control. He was a man of simple means and simple ways. He was easily satisfied and was almost Spartan in his existence. He always told us that he had everything he wanted or needed… I don’t know how better to describe this – but he was very disciplined. While we were looking through some of his things, Todd and I came across sheet after sheet of paper with long-hand division on it – covered front and back! Believe me, THAT takes self control!

Well, there you have it. Nine attributes of my father’s life: LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS and SELF CONTROL. Sound familiar? It should. Galatians 5:22 says this: “…the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. There is no law against these things!”

Thinking of it that way has helped me come to the conclusion that in spite of his lack of participating in “religion,” my father knew what a relationship with Jesus Christ was. And because of that, I’m certain as he stood before the Lord, there was a knowing look of recognition, and the words, “Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter into the rest of your Lord” were spoken over him, as he was reunited with those who loved him.

Dad? Thank you for your example, for your kindness, love and generosity. You have made me a better man for knowing you, and you have helped me learn some of the hard lessons of life with grace and dignity. You will be missed more than you know. I love you immeasurably. May God bless you and keep you, and cause his face to shine upon you. Amen.

"My Mother" A Poem by my Dad...

My Father was hilarious. For as long as I knew him, he would always recite a poem called, "My Mother." We would laugh hysterically when he would do it, so before he died, we got him to do it on video tape, and I transcribed it here. So Dad? This is for you!

My Mother

By William “Bill” Hunter – Grandpa Bill

My Mother

Who took me from my warm, warm cot
And placed me on a cold, cold pot
And made me pee, whether I could or not!

My Mother

Who then my hair would gently part
And squeeze me closer to her heart
And squeeze until I sometimes fart!

My Mother

Who looked at me with eyebrows knit

When in my little drawers would shit
And say to me, “Get up and git!”

My Mother

I love my dad still - even though he isn't with me. It's hard to deal with sometimes, but when I remember things like his poetry, it makes me smile, and I do alright.

I love you Dad!

It is, truly a life unhinged.

My Beloved

You know, there are times in a person's life when they realize just how fortunate they are to be with the one they love. For all intents and purposes, I've been with Chris now for almost 26 years. And though we've had some very difficult, character building experiences in our lives, we've come through them together. I love my wife. Of that there is NO doubt. I see her as something wonderful and precious, and someone I can hardly say I deserve.

Recently I've been reading a lot of poetry and it's sort of bit me... and I've got the bug again... so I'm going to post a new poem I wrote. It's for my sweetheart. The one I love with all my soul. Here it is:

"Chris"

Simple grace found in a sweet round face;
Eyes that sparkle with mischief and joy;
Cheeks red with passionate blood, and a smile.
O, the smile which always steals away my breath and pain.

Belly laughs from a belly large with life and love;
Eyebrows making question marks as her eyes sparkle
with tears of joy. Her nostrils flare with mirth in a
way I can never imitate!

Hands that knit as easily as they pull weeds, or
make keepsakes for ones she loves. Hands that know
the art of compassion and loving touch - bringing assurance
and peace in a troubled, fisted world.

All are bound up and make up the heartbeat of my life.
The very presence of her makes my life take focus and
assume purpose. It's my luck that these eyes, hands and
softness love me back.

Yesterday this wonderful woman I love scored a 99.3% on her Physiology midterm. This is a class that most people end up having to take twice - if not three times! So, not only is she cute, but she's smart too!

I'm lucky. I know it.

Another Stellar Example of TWISTIANITY... LDS-Style

I've never used this forum for this kind of post before... though I doubt very much that anyone who reads my blog doesn't know where I stand. I saw this in the Salt Lake Tribune the other day, and haven't been able to get it out of my mind since. I've never seen a better case of "spin" being applied to anything in my life... even in the shady, low-down world of national politics! I couldn't let it be... I had to let SOMEONE know they were being deceived! So, once more, I've chosen to take up the challenge and run to the aid of truth behind the Zion Curtain.

This is Mike Huckabee... he's running for President of the United States. Recently there was quite a flap because Mr. Huckabee asked an "innocent" sounding question when being interviewed about his opponent, Mitt Romney. Mike said, "Don't the Mormons believe the Jesus and Satan are brothers?" Come on Mike! You're a Southern Baptist. There is no group on the face of the planet, save the Mormons themselves, that know more about Mormon theology, doctrine, and practice! If that was an attempt to shoot from the hip and be underhanded about it at the same time, and sound innocent, YOU FAILED!

THIS is Mitt Romney. He is, perhaps, the most deceptive candidate running for President of the United States this year. If ever there was a person who should NOT be President, it's good ol' Mitt! From a strictly integrity point of view, he lacks any shred of it! He goes on National Television to "settle, once and for all the questions about my religion and whether or not it will affect my Presidency should I be elected..." Showing his immediate and true colors as a slick politician, he did neither. He neither settled questions about his religion - in fact, he pretty much avoided it all together, and he neither talked about how it would affect his presidency. He strung together a bunch of garbage about how HE thinks religion is good, and it's American as apple pie... Well, THAT'S true... but he still said NOTHING of substance, and he certainly didn't answer a thing about Mormonism. Well, getting back to the point, when Mr. Huckabee asked what he did, Mr. Romney in classic LDS spin-doctoring, never addressed the question, but pouted because, "BOO HOO," he was being persecuted. WHAAA. Cry me a river buddy. All he could claim was that Mr. Huckabee was being "un-American" to attack his faith. WAIT A MINUTE! Where is there an attack? He asked a question! (Granted, it was one he knew the answer to, and one that Romney knows the answer to as well!) Mr. Romney? You and I both know, as does every member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, that it is a core doctrine of the LDS Church that Jesus and Satan are brothers! What it boiled down to is this: Admitting so would show the voting American public, that Mormonism is indeed, an organization that falls WELL OUTSIDE the bounds of Christianity. And THAT fact would hurt your election chances.

Well, Mr. Huckabee apologized to poor Mr. Romney for hurting his feel-bads, and the press had a heyday with it all. The following is a statement from the LDS Church published in the Salt Lake Tribune (just one of ALL of the newspapers they own in Utah) last weekend:
"Like all Christians, we believe Jesus is the divine Son of God. Satan is a fallen angel. As the Apostle Paul wrote, God is the Father of all. That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children. Christ, however, was the only begotten in the flesh, and we worship him as the Son of God and the Savior of mankind."

Now, is it just me, or does ANYONE else see the problems inherent with this statement? What the ...?!?!! Since when did the LDS Church start teaching this blather? This isn't what their scriptures say! This isn't what the all-knowing, all-holy brethren used to say! This isn't what I grew up being taught! This isn't the truth is what this isn't! Well, wait a minute, yes it is... and no it isn't. You see, it's not what's being said, it's what has been twisted, omitted, tweaked, and distorted-that's the problem. Let me share. I'll take this quote apart, piece by piece, line by line, and share with you what the LDS Church teaches - from their OWN books... and then you'll understand why this is such an affront to any Bible-believing, Jesus-loving, Born Again Christian on this planet.

To begin with, let's start at the beginning: "Like all Christians, we believe Jesus is the divine Son of God..." This is an obvious attempt to engender the Mormon Church into the public eye as a "mainstream" Christian Church, and, while this statement is generally accepted as true amongst real believers, it holds absolutely no water once a complete understanding of the Mormon definitions of WHO Jesus is has been obtained.

"Satan is a fallen angel.."Again, this statement sounds true - until the full and open teaching of the Mormon Church becomes apparent. "Angel" to a Mormon, is any disembodied human - either before they come to earth (pre-existence), or one who had already died. Because Satan's rebellion took place before he was able to come to earth and obtain a body, he was denied this "blessing" - as were all of those who followed him in rebellion. So, Satan is a "fallen angel" only because he was cast out before he could obtain a body and be tested here on earth and prove himself worthy to return. Being a pre-existent spirit-being put him on equal footing with Jesus Christ before he came to the earth as a babe in the manger. And because he was created by God (as was Jesus Christ according to this distressing statement) he can rightfully be considered the "spirit sibling" or "brother" of Jesus Christ. Which also makes you and I - in fact ALL mankind - equal siblings with both Jesus Christ and Satan.

"As the Apostle Paul wrote, God is the Father of all..." This is indeed true! But a very sneaky and sly pre-qualifier for the statement which follows it, because it places Jesus Christ in the low rank of having been simply created. "That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children..." Knowing that Jesus Christ IS God - one of the three beings in the Biblical Trinity - will protect most from this pernicious lie. The bible openly declares that all things were created by, for and through Jesus Christ. (Colossians 1:15-17). More importantly however, is the fact that the bible openly declares that Satan was created as well! In Ezekiel 28:13 it says, "Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created." Let's see, that would make the score Jesus Christ (God), Creator = 1, Satan, Created being = ZERO

"Christ, however, was the only begotten in the flesh..." In other words, Jesus is the only product of God's (Elohim) incestuous sexual encounter with one of his own "spirit daughters" - Mary, rather than the offspring of the Holy Spirit's moving on one of God's creations, as is expressed in the Holy Bible. Both Brigham Young and Oliver Cowdry declared that Jesus was begotten in the same and like manner as any other man.

"...we worship him as the Son of God and the Savior of mankind."
This statement is also deceptive in total. In that a primary doctrine of the Mormon Church is that those adherents of the church who are able to keep all of the LDS commandments, pay a full and verified tithe, keep the Church's unique dietary laws, called "The Word of Wisdom", accept and "magnify" their callings (or jobs) in the Church, were sealed in the temple, and were deemed worthy by an appropriately appointed Priesthood representative, not to mention keeping "all of the commandments of the Lord," and blindly and obediently sustain "the brethren" and the current "prophet", they would be found worthy to become gods themselves. Sadly, at that time, Jesus Christ, and even God, or Elohim, take a back seat to their own glory an deity. Of note here is the fact that Jesus Christ is "a god" among gods - and was able to do so without fulfilling any of the alleged requirements of the "only true church on earth."

In truth, the bottom line is this: IF the LDS Church is the only true church on this earth - as they will tell you, then why can't they simply tell the truth? If they believe that Jesus Christ and Satan are brothers, then why not tell the truth, and simply let the chips fall where they may? Did you ever once see Jesus Christ putting a spin on something he said so as to not appear to be contrary? No, never. If the LDS Church teaches that their primary aim in their faith is to become gods, why not say so, and let the chips fall where they may? The only reason they don't is because they know that if they were truly honest, they would be seen as the Christian Cult that they are - and not only that, Romney would be seen as an adherent to a church that teaches twisted doctrines of man for truth. In other words, they have more to lose by telling the truth, than by lying just a little to seem to be more than they are.

Recent instruction delivered to LDS personnel associated with the Church Education system demanded that they not tell the whole truth if it wasn't "faith promoting." In other words, it's completely acceptable to lie for the Lord as long as it's helpful to the cause of the church. Only an organization built on deception and lies needs to continue the practice. If that doesn't put a sickening taste in your mouth, nothing else will.

No wonder Romney didn't answer. No wonder the church has to lie. What person in their right mind would believe them if they didn't?

Snow Day!

My first three-day weekend in what feels like forever, and I wake up to a beautiful snow storm! It hasn't snowed in volume all year - we've gotten some here and there, but nothing like this! I just felt like the rest of the world should see the beauty that we've been blessed with this morning!

No wind let the snow accumulate straight up!

There is something so great about waking up and finding so much snow. ESPECIALLY on a day off! Today is Martin Luther King Day, and the first three day weekend I've had since well before Christmas. It has been absolutely WONDERFUL and relaxing!

The Neighbor enjoying Physical exercise!

The other neighbor being smart - using a snowblower!

Our poor evergreen won't survive this one!

The poor birds can't get into their snackbar!

And we can't get to ours either!

I love days like this. I'm so grateful to live in Utah where we can have seasons like this. All of the other aspects of living in Utah aren't so great, but this makes up for it! Even though my AS flares BAD when storms like this approach, I'm always happy and very content when I get to sit at home, in my recliner, with the Lord of the Rings in the DVD player, and watch the snow fall!

Don't you wish you were here?

Veterans Day, and something to think about...

Hi all,

I don't know why, but this Veteran's Day has hit me harder than before. It's true that my service was only just shy of 11 years, and it's also true that I wasn't placed in harms way during my time on active duty. But that doesn't mean that my friends weren't. Or that people I'd known and laughed with are no longer here to be honored.

I've spent the morning watching the History Channel and saw a show entitled, "Band of Bloggers" about young men and women serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan who took the time to write their experiences down and post them on the web for all to see. It inspired me to go out and search for some of these blogs, and found, much to my surprise, that the military has blocked most of them, and that the simpering left-wing journalists have all taken a dim view of their efforts. But I did find one. And on that blog, I found a tribute to a young soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice so I can sit here in my home, isolated from danger, warm, sheltered, and with my family. His name was Sgt. Eddie Jeffers, and he also blogged. The following is the last thing he wrote. My heart goes out to Sgt. Jeffers' family. Thank you for your sacrifice. This needs to be read by every American.

And I think that MY life is unhinged... I should be ashamed.

Hope Rides Alone
By Eddie Jeffers

I stare out into the darkness from my post, and I watch the city burn to the ground. I smell the familiar smells, I walk through the familiar rubble, and I look at the frightened faces that watch me pass down the streets of their neighborhoods. My nerves hardly rest; my hands are steady on a device that has been given to me from my government for the purpose of taking the lives of others.

I sweat, and I am tired. My back aches from the loads I carry. Young American boys look to me to direct them in a manner that will someday allow them to see their families again...and yet, I too, am just a boy....my age not but a few years more than that of the ones I lead. I am stressed, I am scared, and I am paranoid... because death is everywhere. It waits for me, it calls to me from around street corners and windows, and it is always there.

There are the demons that follow me, and tempt me into thoughts and actions that are not my own...but that are necessary for survival. I've made compromises with my humanity. And I am not alone in this. Miles from me are my brethren in this world, who walk in the same streets...who feel the same things, whether they admit to it or not.

And to think, I volunteered for this...

And I am ignorant to the rest of the world...or so I thought.

But even thousands of miles away, in Ramadi , Iraq , the cries and screams and
complaints of the ungrateful reach me. In a year, I will be thrust back into society from a life and mentality that doesn't fit your average man. And then, I will be alone. And then, I will walk down the streets of America, and see the yellow ribbon stickers on the cars of the same people who compare our President to Hitler.

I will watch the television and watch the Cindy Sheehans, and the Al Frankens, and the rest of the ignorant sheep of America spout off their mouths about a subject they know nothing about. It is their right, however, and it is a right that is defended by hundreds of thousands of boys and girls scattered across the world, far from home. I use the word boys and girls, because that's what they are. In the Army, the average age of the infantryman is nineteen years old. The average rank of soldiers killed in action is Private First Class.

People like Cindy Sheehan are ignorant. Not just to this war, but to the results of their idiotic ramblings, or at least I hope they are. They don't realize its effects on this war. In this war, there are no Geneva Conventions, no cease fires. Medics and Chaplains are not spared from the enemy's brutality because it's against the rules. I can only imagine the horrors a military Chaplain would experience at the hands of the enemy. The enemy slinks in the shadows and fights a coward's war against us. It is effective though, as many men and women have died since the start of this war. And the memory of their service to America is tainted by the inconsiderate remarks on our nation's news outlets. And every day, the enemy changes... only now, the enemy is becoming something new. The enemy is transitioning from the Muslim extremists to Americans. The enemy is becoming the very people whom we defend with our lives. And they do not realize it. But in denouncing our actions, denouncing our leaders, denouncing the war we live and fight, they are isolating the military from society...and they are becoming our enemy.

Democrats and peace activists like to toss the word "quagmire" around and compare this war to Vietnam . In a way they are right, this war is becoming like Vietnam. Not the actual war, but in the isolation of country and military. America is not a nation at war; they are a nation with it's military at war. Like it or not, we are here, some of us for our second, or third times; some even for their fourth and so on. Americans are so concerned now with politics, that it is interfering with our war.

Terrorists cut the heads off of American citizens on the Internet... and there is no outrage, but an American soldier kills an Iraqi in the midst of battle, and there are investigations, and sometimes soldiers are even jailed... for doing their job.

It is absolutely sickening to me to think our country has come to this. Why are we so obsessed with the bad news? Why will people stop at nothing to be against this war, no matter how much evidence of the good we've done is thrown in their face? When is the last time CNN or MSNBC or CBS reported the opening of schools and hospitals in Iraq ? Or the leaders of terror cells being detained or killed? It's all happening, but people will not let up their hatred of Bush. They will ignore the good news, because it just might show people that Bush was right.

America has lost its will to fight. It has lost its will to defend what is right and just in the world. The crazy thing of it all is that the American people have not even been asked to sacrifice a single thing. It's not like World War Two, where people rationed food, and turned in cars to be made into metal for tanks. The American people have not been asked to sacrifice anything. Unless you are in the military or the family member of a service member, its life as usual... the war doesn't affect you.

But it affects us. And when it is over, and the troops come home, and they try to piece together what's left of them after their service... where will the detractors be then? Where will the Cindy Sheehans be to comfort and talk to soldiers and help them sort out the last couple years of their lives, most of which have been spent dodging death and wading through the deaths of their friends? They will be where they always are, somewhere far away, where the horrors of the world can't touch them. Somewhere where they can complain about things they will never experience in their lifetime; things that the young men and women of America have willingly taken upon their shoulders.

We are the hope of the Iraqi people. They want what everyone else wants in life: safety, security, somewhere to call home. They want a country that is safe to raise their children in. Not a place where their children will be abducted, raped, and murdered if they do not comply with the terrorists demands. They want to live on, rebuild and prosper. And America has given them the opportunity, but only if we stay true to the cause, and see it to its end. But the country must unite in this endeavor... we cannot place the burden on our military alone. We must all stand up and fight, whether in uniform or not. And supporting us is more than sticking yellow ribbon stickers on your cars. It's supporting our President, our troops and our
cause.

Right now, the burden is all on the American soldiers. Right now, hope rides alone. But it can change, it must change. Because there is only failure and darkness ahead for us as a country, as a people, if it doesn't. Let's stop all the political nonsense, let's stop all the bickering, let's stop all the bad news, and let's stand and fight!

===========================================

So, the next time you want to pipe up and complain about the war, and about the lousy political brew-haha that it's become, remember that someone has bled and died so you can be safe enough to do just that.

Something to think about.

Where has the time gone?

WOW

I can't believe how much time has passed since my last posting. I should be ashamed, but I'm actually feeling simply overwhelmed that life seems to be passing me by!

I should have been keeping this up and going but I haven't had the will to do so. I've been fighting my AS and all the crap that comes with it, and Chris is in school full time! She seems to be doing better at life than I am, and has been invited to be part of the "big brain" club at school. It is a national honors society, very hoity toity, and very much deserved. Chris is still pulling an 4.0. She's my hero.

This is going to be short... I'm just starting back... but I cannot believe that the year is almost already gone... Next, will be a rant about where Thanksgiving disappeared to in the American consciousness.

To ALL the world... including HIM

Yesterday while I was waiting for my bus, a young man with long hair, messy clothing, and a full beard sat down next to me. I had my nose stuck in the bible reading from Titus, and briefly considered if I should witness to him, but suddenly found myself grateful I had my MP3 player on and could disappear behind the music - "Besides," I reasoned, "what would HE want with the Gospel? - It'll just offend him." so I carefully avoided his eyes.

Suddenly through my Vivaldi, I heard him asking me, "Are you attending seminary or something?" while pointing at my open bible and notebook.

Feeling surprised and a little annoyed, I removed my earbud to answer him in the negative, when I noticed a well worn and used pocket Gideon's New Testament open in his hands to the book of Romans! After offering a weak, "No," I said, "just spending time in the Word, You?" while nodding to the bible in his hands.

He smiled at me through his thick beard and said, "Nah, just cruzin' through Romans," and began tucking his small bible into the pocket of his backpack right next to his worn copy of "My Utmost For His Highest" by Oswald Chambers! "Actually," he continued, as he stood up for his bus, "I love all of Paul's letters, I can't get enough of them!" With that, he turned and boarded his bus and was gone.

Convicted in my heart, I looked down to where my thumb was keeping my place in the bible, and it rested next to this verse in Titus 2:11 - "For the Grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to ALL people." I looked up and watched the bus pull away and realized that I'd judged this young man unworthy to receive what Jesus Christ had freely given me, based on his appearances alone.

Suddenly tears stood in my eyes and I realized what a hypocrite I am, and how it was actually ME - not this young man - who needed the offered grace. God had taken me down a peg, and reminded me that His grace is for ALL people, including unkempt, long-haired young men with full beards, and even fuller smiles.

Abba Father, keep me humble. Keep me unhinged... so you can fill me to overflowing with your grace, In your name, Jesus, AMEN!

A dream come true!

Hi all,

Many of you who know me, know that I've always wanted a mandolin. Ever since I started to play guitar, and especially since I began listening to bluegrass music, I've wanted a mandolin. Well, I've finally done it!

Since my father's passing, I've wanted to do something with some of the money that he left us that would be special, that would last, and especially, something that would keep on giving. So, I went out and finally picked up a beautiful natural-wood, solid mahogany mandolin made by Morgan Monroe. NO, I don't know how to play it. But then, I didn't know how to play guitar when I picked one up second-hand 25 years ago! Now, some people may argue that I still can't play guitar either, but I get around!

Thank you Dad for your continued generosity, even from beyond the grave. I give you my word that I'll learn this instrument to your honor. I miss you so much, and I pray that you'll be pleased with my choice of memorial.

Here are some pictures of what it looks like!

So, while I don't know how to play YET, I have something to give me hope and motivate me. Again, thank you Dad, and thank you Chris for understanding how important this was to me. I love you both, and especially you Chris. I am most blessed among men! I love you!

Coming Soon.... ISRAEL!

Well,

I've finally gotten off my butt and have pulled out all of my pictures from my trip to Israel in 2001. At the time I was an Assistant Pastor on staff with Calvary Chapel Salt Lake City. While I'm no longer affiliated with that particular fellowship, this trip was one of the highlights of my life.

I am starting the process of scanning in my photos from the trip (BIG motivation to ensure that I get CD-ROMS made of all my pictures next time... not just hard copies!), and I'll soon be transcribing my journal entries from my trip, and scanning in the drawings that I made in my journal.

Be patient... it will take me some time to do it... but as I get a page done, and the associated pictures scanned in, I'll post them. So, like the old news paper serials of the day, you'll get to see the trip unfold.

Here's a taste:

The Roman Theater at Biet Shean

At this site, I found many pieces of broken Roman glass. It has an amazing opalescent quality to it. I would never have known to look for it had Pastor Terry not told me to kick through the loose dirt and keep my eyes open. I found some really nice pieces... thanks Pastor T.

More later.

I Don't EVER wanna do that again!

I just spent the most miserable night I've ever had...

Here it is, JANUARY, one of the coldest months of the year, and our power went out last night at 7PM. My sister Jeannie and her family had just been down visiting for the afternoon, and had just left when we lost power... well, it got COLD and it got cold FAST!

We called and checked with the power company and every time we'd call, they tell us another three or four hours before the power would be restored! Well, they finally got it back on this afternoon at 12:45! ALMOST 18 HOURS WITHOUT HEAT!! I didn't think it was going to be that bad, until I got up this morning and could see my breath! There was frost ON THE INSIDE of my windows! I couldn't believe it! I looked at my meat thermometer and it was only 38° in my house!

Thankfully we have a gas range, so all of the burners were turned on, a fire was started in the fireplace and still, we couldn't get warm to save our lives! Well, the powers been on now for an hour, and it's finally getting bearable in here.

The worst part of the equation is, we now have two frozen pipes in our house! When I asked the power company who was going to pay to have them thawed, they told me that it wasn't their responsibility... we'll see about that! I had layer upon layer on today and I was still shivering.

Another thing that sucks is with AS, once you get cold, you end up hurting most of the day... or even into the next... I'm in a LOT of pain today... all I can say is better living through chemicals!

Talk about a life unhinged? Stay tuned for updates to the power saga!
